Jack (Jared Leto) is a Gen-Xer with nowhere to go until he gets caught in bed with a mobster’s woman. Now, with three thugs after him, he and best pal Pilot (Jake Gyllenhaal) hit the road to Seattle. Along the way, they encounter sexy Cassie (Selma Blair), who decides to hitch a ride. Together, they end up on the wildest trip of their lives! Told against the raw gruge music backdrop of the mid-’90′s, “Highway” confronts life, death and love head-on to remind us that the road goes in many directi

The Big Roads: The Untold Story of the Engineers, Visionaries, and Trailblazers Who Created the American Superhighways

Perhaps nothing changed the face of America more than the creation of the interstate system. At once a connective network, economic force, man-made wonder, and bringer of sprawl and blight, the interstate system turned haphazard dirt tracks into an organized framework of paved highways. The Big Roads documents this historic feat, from its inception at the turn of the century to its completion during Eisenhower’s presidency. But once those plans began to be put into place, it turned out that no

10 Best Places to Visit in The Us-#3 The Pacific Coast Highway

Now this may not sound like much of a vacation. But for those who crave the open road, there is no route more scenic than the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH1) from San Francisco to Orange County to arrive at #3 on the list of top 10 places to visit in the US. Any time of the year this drive is gorgeous.

A forewarning is this: if you can avoid driving south from San Francisco on Saturday morning or returning that way on Sunday afternoon, you will save the family a lot of stress. Plan around this because it is the great escape to venture toward Santa Cruz for a weekend splash and the one-lane highway is heavily backed up during these times.

Things to See Along the Way

Other than that, get out your road map. There is much to see. Going south from San Francisco you can plan your route. Santa Cruz has a great beach in the town with a pier and many restaurants and eating establishments. If you want something more tranquil, try Davenport. This will be well before you reach Santa Cruz. The Point Reyes National Seashore is definitely a stop to make, if not to spend the night at the hostel at the light house.

If you want a historic, quaint and artsy sensation, then you will want to explore Half-Moon Bay. There are plenty of little refurbished houses that are now hotels. Everything on this route is convenient for the driver.

Monterey Bay is a lovely place to stop with a must-see aquarium. From here to Carmel are wonderful places to enjoy a pic-nic or a stroll along the cliffs. There are beaches all along the way with easy parking and access in and out.

Big Sur is a Must-See Stop Along the PCH 1

One site not to miss with all its wildlife and wonder is Big Sur. One could easily spend a few days here alone taking in the fabulous sights. This includes the Elephant Seals that come on shore at the Ano Nuevo State Reserve. .

These spots are ideal for walking out to tide pools and spotting sea life like crabs and starfish, sea anemones and seals. Be sure to look for dolphins and whales as you meander down the coast.

The Pacific Coast Highway offers nearly 500 miles of activity and options from camping to surfing, swimming, collecting sea shells, strolling. There are plenty of facilities available when you need to take a break. It will make for an unforgettable vacation. The drive really is a pleasant make-up of sights and smells of the sea changing with each wind of the road with cliffs and crashing waves against sand and rock and reef.

North Cascades Highway Off

North Cascades Highway: Off The Beaten Path

The scenery in Washington seems to get even more spectacular as visitors head from gorgeous Puget Sound over the Cascade Mountains.

If they keep driving, they eventually get to the Columbia River and the complete change of scenery from Colorado-style mountains to Iowa wheat fields all in the space of a few miles. Visitors who grew up in flatter, less colorful areas go home raving about the Northwest’s natural beauty.

Vistors traveling from late spring through early fall have a special advantage if they don’t mind driving a few extra miles. Normally impassable in winter, the North Cascades Highway is cleared for travel once the winter snowstorms have subsided, and visitors wanting to drive deep into some of the more untouched parts of Washington state would do well to consider the six-hour drive from the Seattle area over to Wenatchee, an excellent place to spend the night and a popular destination in its own right.

The North Cascades Highway will take you through North Cascades National Park – a land of towering peaks and wonderful scenic vistas combining the mountains, forests, lakes and streams pictured on popular postcards of the region.

It’s not a route that you want to hurry through; the best thing to do is to just make the day of it, stopping at places along the way at your own pace. Yes, it will double the normal travel time between Seattle and Wenatchee, but it will be worth it.

The western terminus of the North Cascades Highway is in Sedro Woolley, in Northwest Washington. So the first couple of hours from Seattle will be spent just getting to the highway – Highway 20 – and you’ll find it an easy drive by freeway offering plenty to see along the way as you head north to Everett and through Snohomish and Skagit counties. To the west is Puget Sound – to the east is the range of mountains that you will be crossing later in the day.

For the most part, Highway 20 is a two-lane road, although there are plenty of passing lanes that appear from time to time. But remember – this is a day in which you are going to savor the journey, not watch the clock. Getting there is not just half the fun – it’s almost all of it.

The Highway 20 drive at first meanders through lowlands and then foothills, roughly following the winding path of the Skagit River, taking you through the small towns of Concrete, Rockport and Marblemount, where you can find food and supplies. Just up the road a ways is Newhalem, where you’ll be entering the North Cascades National Park and will find a visitor center with exhibits, maps and backcountry permits should you want to stop and do some hiking along the way.

Just past Newhalem, you start to get a preview of the dramatic scenery ahead. You see the river valley give way to the spectacular 540-foot-high Ross Dam which, along with two other dams in the area, create power for the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. First you drive along Ross Lake, and then the larger Diablo Lake comes into full view with plenty of stopping points along the way to take photos.

The overlooks above Ross and Diablo Lakes are especially good for pictures. You’ll notice that Ross Lake is teal, while Diablo is jade-colored – a distinction that is caused by the rock dust that is suspended in the water and actually reflecting the colors of the forest and the sky.

Your route takes you further along the Ross Lake Recreation Area and over Washington Pass where soon you come upon the most spectacular site of your journey: the 7,600-foot Liberty Bell Mountain that completely dominates the skyline and almost makes this part of the pass look impassable. The best views are from the off-road viewpoint at the top of the pass where you can see far ahead on the highway and get a sense of the rugged mountain terrain that seems so untouched here in the North Cascades.

Another half-hour up the road and you’re approaching the Methow River Valley and Winthrop, one of North Central Washington’s favorite destinations. Everyone knows the success that Leavenworth has been with its Bavarian storefronts and, a few decades ago, Winthrop’s town fathers took a tood look at the massive influx of tourists that change-over had brought. Winthrop decided to use an Old West theme and, to this day, attracts hordes of tourists who enjoy visiting the western themed buildings and local attractions. Winthrop is also the perfect place to stop for lunch with several restaurants offering a variety of food specialties.

The drive down the Methow Valley toward the Columbia River gradually changes colors from the greens of the thick forests behind you to the browns of the more sun-drenched landscapes ahead of you. In an hour you’re at the Columbia River and, in another hour you reach Wenatchee, Apple Capital of the World and home to all kinds of summer and winter recreation. Its location in the shadows the Cascades — yet just a few miles from the wheatfields of Eastern Washington — means it’s a haven for people who love a variety of climate and terrain and a quiet smalltown life.

On our most recent trip to Wenatchee, we stayed at the Springhill Suites, Wenatchee’s newest hotel and a pleasant surprise. Our suite was like a boutique hotel you would find in the Big City with carefully coordinated colors and stylings and a living room as well as two queen beds. This hotel is getting rave reviews from all the travel sites and it’s likely because of the styling, the amenities – an indoor pool, Jacuzzi and exercise area are available – and the food options that include a generous breakfast and even dinner several nights a week – all included in the price of your suite.

You might choose to stay in Wenatchee a few days, or make the return trip to Seattle the next day through the Bavarian Village of Leavenworth and then over Stevens or Snoqualmie Pass – a three-hour drive. But any way you look at it, the North Cascades Highway is an experience well worth the time and effort.

AT A GLANCE

WHERE: The North Cascades Highway stretches from Sedro Woolley in Northwest Washington to the town of Winthrop in North Central Washington. Highway 20 continues southeast from Winthrop to a junction with Highway 153 which takes you to Pateros and the junction with Highway 97, which follows the Columbia River into Wenatchee.

WHAT: The North Cascades Highway is one of the country’s most scenic roadways and takes visitors through a variety of terrain including some of the most rugged mountains in Washington state.

WHEN: The highway is generally closed during the winter months because of the snow. It opens usually in April and closes sometime between mid-November and early December.

WHY: North Cascades Highway gives you a feel for the wilderness parts of Washington state and offers visitors a pleasant drive along with plenty of opportunities to enjoy panoramic mountain views.

Ugliest Vintage Rocking Chair in the County

Be the only person in this county to proudly own the ugliest rocking chair in this county….Yep, you read it right. I bought this rocking chair, (ROFLMAO) to teach myself how to re-upholstery. Well, that went over like a lead balloon. I will say, the 1 and only redeeming quality this rocking chair has is….(drum roll please) it is comfortable to sit and rock in. So, if you think you are brave enough to own such a fine ugly rocking chair, and have the guts to come in and buy it, you will be the laughing stock of the neighborhood. I am not making a dime on this rocking chair. Yep, I paid that for it, not to mention the taxes, and the gas to get it…I must have been high on stupidity. The only flaw, other then being butt ugly…it appears a pooch tried to put this rocking chair out of it’s misery, so there is some damage to back of the wood, see the picture, if you can stand to look at it…LOL.
